VINHEDO, Brazil, Aug 10 (Reuters) — Overnight, Brazilian civil defense teams have been working diligently to recover the remains of passengers from a plane that crashed near Sao Paulo on Friday, resulting in the deaths of all 62 individuals on board. By Saturday morning, authorities had retrieved at least 21 bodies, with two already identified at the scene. The remains are now being transported to the police morgue in Sao Paulo for further examination.
Voepass, the regional airline operating the flight, initially reported 57 passengers and four crew members onboard. However, it was later confirmed that there was an additional passenger, raising the total number of fatalities to 62. Identification efforts are being conducted using physical evidence, documents, and personal items such as cell phones, as explained by firefighter Maycon Cristo.
After collecting all necessary evidence, the bodies will be moved to Sao Paulo for continued identification processes. Relatives of the deceased have arrived in the city to provide DNA samples and other information to assist with the identification process.
The aircraft, an ATR-72 turboprop, was traveling from Cascavel in the state of Parana to Sao Paulo when it crashed around 1:30 p.m. local time (1630 GMT) in Vinhedo, roughly 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo. ATR, the Franco-Italian manufacturer of the plane, has indicated that its experts are actively involved in investigating the incident.
